- What License do I Need to Drive A Motorhome?
The type of licence required depends on your age and the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass (MAM), which includes its weight plus the maximum load it can carry.
For smaller vehicles under 3,500 kg, a standard car licence (category B) is sufficient.
For larger vehicles, a different category licence is required. To drive motorhomes with a MAM between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, you’ll need a category C1 licence while vehicles over 7.5 tonnes require a category C licence.
- How Much is Road Tax?
The tax rate depends on the vehicle’s gross weight and engine size if under 3.5 tonnes. For private or light goods vehicles up to 3,500 kg, road tax starts at £180 (for engines under 1549cc) and £295 for larger engines. Private heavy goods vehicles over 3,500 kg have an annual tax of £165.
- Can Motorhomes go in the Fast Lane on A Motorway?
Motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes can use the fast lane on dual carriageways and motorways. Heavier motorhomes can only do so if fitted with a speed limiter. Motorhomes towing a trailer cannot use the outside lane.
- Can you Park Motorhomes on the Street?
You can usually park your motorhome on the street as it’s a licensed vehicle, but local authorities’ rules and regulations determine how long you can stay. Restrictions may apply if you’re sleeping in it, with some areas requiring a permit or banning overnight parking. In certain locations, street parking is entirely prohibited, especially on narrow or one-way streets.
- What Class MOT Are Motorhomes?
MOTs are classified from Class 1 to 7 based on the vehicle’s size and type. Motorhomes are classified as Class 4, provided they have no more than 8 passengers. Vehicles over 3 tonnes need a Class 7 MOT.
- What are Class 'A' Motorhomes?
Class A motorhomes are luxury vehicles with spacious interiors and heavy-duty chassis, making them ideal for extended trips or full-time road living. They offer prestigious layouts with better facilities such as larger showers, extra storage and additional beds. Typical features include a full kitchen, self-contained bathroom, integrated cabin and fully equipped interior with appliances.
- Can I fit Extra Seatbelts?
It is legal to fit additional seat belts in motorhomes, especially older models (pre-2007) that may lack rear seatbelts. If you’re buying an older vehicle and want to improve safety, extra seat belts can be installed. However, it’s recommended to have a professional fit them, as it’s a complex task.
- Can you Live in A Motorhome in the UK?
Yes, you can sleep in your motorhome as long as it’s road legal and has passed its MOT. Parking overnight is usually allowed in driveways with the homeowner’s permission, but long-term stays can become illegal. Consider local regulations before choosing your parking spot.
