Servicing Your Motorhome – A Practical Guide with Maintenance Tips

By Elite Motorhomes on October 22nd, 2025

Now that you are the proud owner of your motorhome, it is important you know how to maintain it. Just like any vehicle, your motorhome needs regular maintenance to ensure it runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Staying on top of this care not only helps you avoid unexpected and costly repairs, but also extends the life of your motorhome, giving you more years of adventure on the road!

In this guide, we will explore a range of ways to keep your motorhome in top condition, from the importance of annual servicing and MOTs, to what a habitation check involves, along with general maintenance tips. By following this guide, you will be ready for the road and confident that nothing will disrupt your next journey.

Motorhome Servicing

Think of it like a health check-up for your motorhome. An annual service is the easiest way to keep it running smoothly and safely. A typical service focuses on the chassis and engine, based on mileage and manufacturer schedules. Since motorhomes often cover fewer miles than everyday vehicles, we also recommend an oil and filter change in the years between full services. It’s a quick, simple step that helps prevent wear and keeps everything in line with manufacturer guidance.

Here is a quick overview of why servicing is so important:

Benefit of ServicingWhy it Matters
Safety firstFull inspection to spot and fix problems early
Warranty protectionKeeps manufacturer warranty valid
Save moneyPrevents small issues becoming costly repairs
Resale ValueMaintains the value of your motorhome
Peak performanceEnsures smooth and efficiently running

At Elite Motorhomes, our qualified technicians and fully equipped workshop are ready to look after any make or model. Plus, every oil and filter change also comes with a free mechanical health check. And if your motorhome ever needs attention beyond routine servicing, our Elite Repairs team is on hand with comprehensive repair solutions.

Motorhome MOT

If you own a new motorhome, you won’t need an MOT until it reaches three years old. This is because new vehicles are considered safe and roadworthy when they leave the factory, so an MOT isn’t required straight away. However, your motorhome will still need regular servicing from the first year to look after the engine, brakes, tyres, and other mechanical systems. The MOT, on the other hand, is a legal safety test that becomes necessary once the vehicle is older. From three years onwards, an MOT is required every year to ensure your motorhome remains safe to drive.

At Elite Motorhomes, we offer MOTs that are DVSA-approved and carried out by officially nominated testers. Our technicians are manufacturer-trained, and our workshop is fully equipped with genuine parts and accessories, as well as manufacturer approval. We also want our customers to feel comfortable while waiting for their MOT, so we provide complimentary tea and coffee, free Wi-Fi, and a lounge area where you can relax.

What Exactly is a Habitation Check?

This is a separate check for the ‘house’ part of your motorhome and involves a professional inspection to ensure everything in the living area is safe, working properly, and running efficiently. At Elite Motorhomes, we recommend having this done annually to keep every part of your motorhome in top condition. It also helps maintain your manufacturer and global warranties, giving you extra peace of mind on your adventures.

So, What Does a Habitation Check Involve?

  • 12 Volt Electrical and Battery testing
  • 230 Volt Mains Electrics and Appliance Testing Inc. RCD/Trips operation
  • Water Systems
  • Gas soundness, and appliance testing, recording safe Carbon Monoxide levels
  • Ventilation levels
  • Fire Safety, Smoke C02 Alarms
  • Bodywork
  • Full Damp Survey, with levels recorded
